Tolls or songs are playing twice in the same event

If your tolls are playing twice during the same event there are a few possible causes related to how you configured your event(s) in your template*:

  1. You have told eCarillon to play the toll automatically AND selected them to play manually in the same event
  2. You have told eCarillon to play the toll automatically AND you have chosen to play randomly from a playlist that includes tolls
  3. You have accidentally selected your toll manually in your play list

Cause 3

The last of these is very unlikely and very easy to remedy so we'll cover it first. Just preview your problem template in the template browser. Next, find the problem event in the preview, expand it, and look at your list of songs selected in the event (if you opted to select the songs manually). Be sure that the toll is not listed more than once in the list of songs. If it is, then simply edit that template and its respective event and then select and remove the duplicate from that event's song list.

Toll/Chime Setting Refresher

For the other two causes it is good to first refresh your understanding of the eCarillon interface. The selection and corresponding icon shown in the images below represent the default toll/chime setting. That is, when the checkbox is selected and the corresponding icon appears on your event preview, eCarillon will automatically start your event with the time-appropriate Westminster chime and toll. For example: if the event is set to 12:00PM and the setting is checked, eCarillon will start the event automatically with the top of the hour Westminster chime, 12 tolls and then do anything else you selected for the event.

Causes 1 and 2

If you understood the refresher above then it is pretty easy to see how you could get a duplicate toll if you turned on this feature AND manually selected to play a toll/chime or told the software to choose randomly from a list of things including the toll/chime. Nevertheless, there are a couple of rules of thumb that will help you avoid this issue and you can check that your problem event(s) are following these rules and edit them appropriately if not.

  1. Either check the default chime selection discussed above OR if you want to do your own thing, manually add your toll/chime to your song list when creating an event, NEVER DO BOTH
  2. Always ensure that your selected "random" playlist includes only songs and no tolls or chimes. If you have tolls or chimes in your playlist the randomize feature will eventually play them and that is probably not your desired behavior
